The Little Things Make a Difference

The average college student can’t help being stressed, but too often we stress about the big issues and ignore the little things that make our daily routines bearable.

As if going to class and worrying about homework, exams, pop quizzes and group assignments aren’t enough, lots of students are involved in several different organizations while also trying to juggle jobs and social lives. With endless papers, social issues and a dwindling bank account, the day-to-day worries of our college years often weigh us down.

Sometimes, it takes other people to help make the day go by smoother.  Senior broadcast journalism major Gabrielle Monroe enjoys seeing friends on campus. “It’s cool to see people you know on the yard when it’s warm outside, and just taking the time out to catch up with them,” said Monroe.

Sophomore human development major Elise Peterson is a teacher at William E. Doar, Jr. Public Charter School for the Performing Arts, in addition to being a student. “Going to work makes going to school so much easier,” Peterson said. “When I’m teaching my class, and the students actually understand or get enthused about the material I’ve prepared for them, they make it all worth it.” Peterson also enjoys getting e-mails from her boyfriend.

Jeremy Johnson, a junior advertising major, believes you can also benefit from someone else’s kindness. “What more could you ask for when you have a friend that lives off campus that cooks a good meal for you every now and then?”

“It’s even nicer to have a teacher that speaks English well,” Johnson said.
Some students who live off campus still manage to maintain a positive outlook, even though they don’t have the convenience of living on campus.

“Although I live off campus – it can be a hassle – but I think about how lucky I am live near a shuttle stop,” said Tenise Greaves, a junior political science major.

Senior mechanical engineering major Justin Lamb said although it’s convenient to have a car as a student, being a commuter  hasn’t been the easiest thing. “What makes my day better is knowing that I made it throughout the day without getting a boot, because I know they’re out looking for me,” Lamb said.

Other students think about life post-graduation and begin to appreciate their collegiate careers.

Senior public relations major Asha Pollard finds joy in the fact that she can do certain things as a college student that she will not be able to do after graduation. “I really enjoy taking naps,” Pollard said. “I know when I get a job, I won’t be able to take naps in the middle of the day like I do now in between classes.”

Junior print journalism major Heather Robinson said, “I realize that it’s a blessing that I’ve made it this far, so I’m constantly pushing myself to not be complacent.”

“I think of my family and friends who believe in me and there’s no way I could let them down.” Putting things into perspective allows Robinson to find the motivation to make her dreams a reality.

Senior marketing major Nick Jackson is content knowing that he’s at a place that he believes will put him in a better position to get what he wants out of life.

All things considered, taking time out to acknowledge the little things that provide fulfillment can help make stressful years feel like they’re worth the effort.
