Metro police have confirmed  nine fatalities and dozens of injuries on Monday after two red-line trains collided in the District, leaving one car on top of the other.

The six-car train collision occurred around 5 p.m., with at least 55 passengers on board near the Washington, D.C.-Maryland border. The train was headed to Shady Grove, and passengers are currently being escorted from the trains out of the Fort Totten station. Metro officials advise commuters to avoid the line as there will be delays all night.

Metro police report mass injuries and are expecting casualties, as per an e-mail alert. D.C. Fire spokesman Alan Etter said there were several injuries, although both the exact number of those injuries and the cause for the collision are still unknown.
