Howard Student Suspected of Terrorism

Ramy Zamzam, a Howard dental student, has been detained in Pakistan along with 4 other U.S. Citizens for suspicions of terrorism. Zamzam and the other men were reported missing around Nov. 29. Students helped in the search for the men by creating a Facebook group and disseminating e-mails asking for help in locating Zamzam with the knowledge that the men were last seen headed towards Balitmore. Wednesday, a raid on a house in Sarghoda revealed that the men were in Pakistan. They are currently being investigated to see if they have any links to extremist groups. Before their departure, it is reported that a farewell video was made showing scenes of war with the call to action that Muslims must be defended. Although Howard cannot release any information about Zamzam or the situation in Pakistan, University Spokeswoman Kerry Ann Hamilton said, "There is no evidence of imminent harm to the University community." Officials in the U.S. Department of State told The Hilltop that they are still trying to gather information from Pakistani law enforcement officials. More information will be available at a later date.

Bison Drop Season Finale, Look to Next Season

As the 2009 football season ended, the Bison left the field until next fall. Ending the season with a record of 2-9 after falling to Delaware State Saturday, it’s clear that Howard University’s football team has not made a dramatic turn-around from past seasons, but progress may not be too far off in the horizon.

“We made a change in the offensive line, and this year I think we might be in the top 16 in the country with sacks given up. It’s an improvement,” head coach Carey Bailey said.

Umoja: The Hilltop 24

It is not myth, speculation or arrogance. Every prominent black leader that has changed the world with a mere thought has graced the halls of Howard University. With that said, it is not surprising to know that students here right now still possess the power to change the world. One thing about Howard always remains true, for good or bad it never changes. We face the same challenges the greats faced, as a consequence, we will continue to produce the best and the brightest.

Staff Editorial:Don’t Students Deserve to Know What’s Going On?

Our View: Students deserve to be aware and informed about important things that affect us.

“The ability to use institutional research capabilities to quantitatively and qualitatively assess where a college or university is with respect to all aspects of its operations is the only way to chart where the institution needs to go, and how to get there.”

This quote comes from Dr. Michael Middaugh, the assistant vice president for Institutional Research and Planning at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. The quote was included in the power point presentation published by the Howard University Self-Study Survey Steering Committee as a record of findings and information gathered by the self-study last yea
